Find out what Earth Day is, when it takes place, and how you can take part in sustainability initiatives in 小蓝视频

10 mins

At 小蓝视频, we recognise the importance of protecting our planet, which is why we鈥檙e committed to reducing our environmental impact. From using renewable energy to working towards a climate-positive future.

Earth Day 2025 is an opportunity to build on this progress and take action. Here鈥檚 what it鈥檚 all about and how you can get involved on campus and beyond.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event dedicated to environmental protection. It aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices globally.

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is observed on 22 April each year. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, marking a significant moment in the environmental movement.

Earth Day 2025

The is 鈥淥ur Power, Our Planet鈥. This theme emphasises the importance of renewable energy and aims to triple global clean electricity generation by 2030.

How we鈥檙e supporting the importance of renewable energy

The 小蓝视频 is taking strong steps towards sustainability, aligning with Earth Day 2025's focus on renewable energy. Here are some of the steps we鈥檙e taking below:

The University aims to be climate-positive and reduce our carbon footprints in various ways, including:

  • Our Information Services Department are working on a project to reduce energy consumption from PCs that are on stand-by.
  • All new builds are fully electric, using a variety of renewable energy sources where possible 鈥 for example, air source heat pumps to reduce the electricity needed for heating.
  • PV arrays (solar panels) and solar thermal systems are installed across campus to generate renewable energy onsite.
  • We鈥檙e about to deploy an energy data analysis and reporting platform to help monitor consumption patterns and identify opportunities to improve energy performance.
  • As part of our ISO14001-accredited Environmental Management System, we complete regular audits of all buildings to assess environmental performance, including energy use and areas for improvement.

All electricity used by the University comes from renewable sources, which directly contributes to cleaner energy consumption.

The University has also implemented measures like motion-sensor lighting and upgraded heating systems to reduce energy use and lower carbon emissions.

EV chargers are available on campus to encourage low-carbon transport, helping to improve air quality in 小蓝视频.

We regularly monitor our waste management processes to improve efficiency. While recycling is important, we prioritise reducing and re-using wherever possible. For example:

  • We use a furniture re-use company to extend the life of office furnishings.
  • Cooking oil from our kitchens is converted into biodiesel.
  • All general waste that can鈥檛 be reused or recycled is sent to an energy recovery facility, where it鈥檚 converted into electricity for the grid.

How to get involved in Earth Day in 小蓝视频

  • Attend local events: Join community clean-ups, tree planting activities, or educational workshops. We offer a variety of events that you can explore below. also provides various events and resources focused on renewable energy, conservation, and climate action.
  • Adopt sustainable practices: Reduce waste, conserve water, switch off unused devices, and use energy-efficient appliances like LED bulbs and providers that invest in renewables. If you鈥檙e a current student with us, explore our advice on .
  • Advocate: Support policies and initiatives that promote environmental protection and renewable energy. In 小蓝视频, you can join to push for better environmental policies, join campaign meetings and take part in community walks.
  • Educate: Share information about environmental issues and solutions in your community. Why not discuss with friends, family, or colleagues about the small changes they can make to transition to more sustainable energy sources. Discover ways to start through .
  • Take action: Cut down on the number of plastics you use. Plastics are derived from fossil fuels and therefore contribute to the climate crisis, as well as polluting the environment. The Revolution Plastics Institute is working to solve the plastic pollution crisis by bringing people together to find practical solutions. Stay informed and be part of the movement 鈥 .
