鈥榃ear Red Day - Show Racism the Red Card鈥, an annual anti-racism awareness day, will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Friday 18 October.

The annual event aims to showcase the importance of building an inclusive culture whilst also seeking to change hearts, change minds and change lives.

Last year over 615,000 people nationally symbolically wore red to showcase their support. This year we hope that our community in the university will follow suit, echoing our inclusive culture and respect for one another, whilst helping the charity reach their target of 1 million supporters.

Chris Chang, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and strategic lead for EDI said: 鈥淲ear Red Day enables both staff and students to come together in a show of solidarity against a serious issue鈥.

鈥淭his extremely important awareness day demonstrates our commitment as a university to foster a diverse environment and echoes our values which include building a positive, inclusive culture that inspires staff and students and ensures that 鈥榳e are different voices, one community鈥. I am extremely proud to be part of an institution where everyone is valued and respected.鈥

The event coincides with Black History Month (BHM), which is taking place from Tuesday 1 October 鈥 Thursday 31 October. The University aims to mark BHM by providing a number of events which include a UoP Black History Showcase and Nollywood Comedy Film Night at Sparks. The full list of events can be found on our Black History Month blog page.

Equality, diversity and inclusion at the University

We are determined to create a community based on dignity and respect where everyone is able to thrive and reflect our University values to be ambitious, open and responsible.

Our three objectives are:

  • To build a positive, inclusive culture that inspires staff and students to realise their potential.
  • To work towards fair representation and fair outcomes for our staff and student communities.
  • To develop a robust understanding of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) data to effect sound evidence-based decision making.

We have a EDI Framework and EDI Governance Structure in place to help us achieve our objectives, which includes providing a greater voice to our staff and student networks and a new steering group with more senior leadership from across the University to drive forward the changes needed.

We also have a Dignity and Respect campaign, which was launched across campus to champion our Student Charter and highlight unacceptable behaviours and ensure students know where to report them via our Report and Support tool.

Please see our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion web pages for more detailed information.
